From an eternal perspective, the coming of Christ and His kingdom is but one coming. Salvation is likewise a process involving sufferingand then glory. No wonder His words stung and prompted them to act as they did. In Daniel's dream the Medo-Persian empire and it king Cyrus was represented by the bear. The prophecy of Daniel 7 nevertheless had great relevance and application to those in Daniels day. Daniels response is testimony to this reality. God answered Daniel's prayer, and Daniel praised the Lord (Dan 2:19-23). Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonished for a time, and his thoughts troubled him. 7 After this I kept looking in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrifying and extremely strong; and it had large iron teeth. While conservative, evangelical scholars believe the prophecies in Daniel are true, their interpretations differ greatly. Je. His mind was troubled. The expression is used in the Psalms in a more pregnant way, in reference to the coming Messiah. Daniel was terrified or alarmed by the scenes he had seen in his mind and desired to understand what they meant. Desiring a more detailed explanation, he apparently asked for one and received it. Daniel explained to the king that the statue represented four successive kingdoms based upon power and wealth, beginning with Babylon, while the stone and mountain signified a kingdom established by God that would never be destroyed nor given to other people. The transfiguration of our Lord was but a foretaste of His coming glorious kingdom (16:28). Public sentiment was turning against this foreign religion, and the Babylonians, including Belshazzar, wanted a return to their old time religion the pagan worship of the gods of Babylon. In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. The kingdom of God would not be established in Daniels lifetime, nor in the life of those who returned to the land of Israel from their captivity. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. Through the vision of a magnificent, awe-inspiring statue, God reveals the future for Gentile kings and their kingdoms. In Ezekiel, and even in Daniel (8:17), it is used in reference to a prophet. In my opinion, the most dramatic reference of our Lord to His identity as the Son of Man comes as the Lord Jesus stands on trial before the Sanhedrin and the high priest: 59 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, in order that they might put Him to death; 60 and they did not find it, even though many false witnesses came forward. There seems to be a close connection between the vision of Nebuchadnezzar, which is revealed and interpreted in chapter 2, and the vision of Daniel in chapter 7. 1. The lesson was prepared for older students. Wheaton, IL : Victor Books, 1983-c1985, S. 1:1352, [4]LaHaye, Tim and Hindson, Ed., editors, The Popular Bible Prophecy Commentary. (4) Suffering is to be expected by the saints, before they enter into the glorious kingdom of God. The Old Testament prophet did not see the gap because he viewed the coming of Christ as God does. So King Nebuchadnezzar honored God's men. In the first use of this expression, being a son of man was contrasted with being God: God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and will He not do it? The entire empire was conquered between 334 and 330 B.C., just four years. And they did! Usually it refers to a person as a human being. What role do they play in relation to the four beasts? For this reason, I wish to clearly state the foundational presuppositions and principles on which this exposition of Daniel is based. 7 And it was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them; and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. 31-35). 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. Then, in Daniel 2, the Lord gave Nebuchadnezzar a dream that only Daniel could interpret. For the time, it was these Jewish leaders who were beastly, arrogant, and blasphemous, and because of this they would suffer divine judgment. A night vision is given to king Nebuchadnezzar, apparently early in his reign as king of Babylon. At this time the kingdom of God is established. What is its message to Daniel, to the Jews, and to us? 15 As for me, Daniel, my spirit was distressed within me, and the visions in my mind kept alarming me. The second scene portrays the establishment of the thrones on which the Ancient of Days and those holding court are to be seated to pronounce judgment. Both sets of kingdoms are brought to a sudden end and are replaced by an eternal kingdom. The ten horns are of interest to him, but most of all that final horn which arose, surpassing and replacing three others and speaking boastfully. We have talked about several times since starting this series about how studying Bible prophecy should influence you. The kingdom of God will be established and the saints will possess it forever. According to our text, the prophecies of Daniel 7 will not be fulfilled for a considerable period of time. And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and thus they said to it, Arise, devour much meat! 6 After this I kept looking, and behold, another one, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird; the beast also had four heads, and dominion was given to it. These horns are also kings, from whom kingdoms arise (verse 24). The horn of the beast that made war against the saints was one of 10 kings who prevailed until the Ancient of days came and judged against him in favor of the saints. I kept looking until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man; a human mind also was given to it. During this ten-nation confederation another ruler will rise as described by the little horn. Daniel explains that each of these metals represents a kingdom that would rule the world, and the stone is God . Until Gods eternal kingdom is established, kingdoms will progress from bad to worse. Many others may have reluctantly professed or actually adopted the Jewish religion. The beasts are a horrifying and frightening sight; the heavenly court scene is one of regal splendor and beauty. We need to be waiting and prepared for His return. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast; 4 and they worshiped the dragon, because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him? 5 And there was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies; and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him. I also told you it corresponded to the dream of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel chapter 2, but with more detail. In order to save Rose, Unity asks her to give up whatever makes her the dream vortex. Chapter 2 contains a very significant prophecy, revealed by God to king Nebuchadnezzar. The angel went on in this summary to tell Daniel that the saints of the Highest One would receive the kingdom and possess it forever. History has shown this to be true in the past, and prophecy assures us that it will be true in the future. Verses 1-14 contain the vision which God gave to Daniel. If taken seriously, we will find the future sobering as well. Daniel 7 indicates in the clearest way that prior to the coming of the kingdom of God the saints will suffer at the hand of the final horn and even be overpowered by him. Prophecy speaks not only of the joys and glories of Gods kingdom to come but of the suffering and tribulation preceding the eternal blessings of the kingdom of God. Remember Daniel was in his 60s when he received this revelation. He was chosen by God to speak to the Jews in Babylon and to show them God's future plans. The fourth portion of the statue in Daniel 2 is the iron legs and feet and toes of partly iron and partly baked clay which represented the Roman empire. The process of having a baby involves the pains of childbirth. Daniel 2:24-49 New International Version Daniel Interprets the Dream 24 Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, "Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. The last kingdom has at least eleven kings. God has revealed in this interpretation what He wants us to know and has kept back that which we need not know. A true account of what happened can only be gathered by reading Daniel 2:18; Daniel 2:28 by the side of this verse. These kingdoms go from bad to worse. Does this dream have any significance for us? La Habra, CA : The Lockman Foundation, 1995, [6]New American Standard Bible : 1995 Update. Arrogant, boastful, and even blasphemous kings will reign over the nations, opposing God and oppressing His saints. 27 Then the sovereignty, the dominion, and the greatness of all the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Highest One; His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all the dominions will serve and obey Him. 28 At this point the revelation ended. I did not include the insert today because I have already included it several times. God may choose to delay judgment on the wicked until their sin reaches full bloom; the possession of the land of Canaan would not happen in Abrahams lifetime, but more than 400 years later after the suffering of the people of God (see Genesis 15:12-17). 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. As the boasting horn of Daniel 7 seems to be getting away with his blasphemies and his oppression of the saints, it seems to him he can do whatever he wishes, including the changing of times and law. Jesus quoted the words of Daniel 7:13. Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Thirdly (and most importantly), the prophecies of Daniel mean exactly what God says they mean, nothing more and nothing less. So it was for our Lord (1 Peter 1:10-12), and so it will be for us. Those of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar, and Darius all agree with the prophecy of Daniel 7. Daniel is greatly distressed by the vision which he sees in chapter 7. It is significant for us to note Daniels reaction to this revelation from God. Both the statue parts (made of different metals) and the beasts represent kings and kingdoms. Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. At the outset of the account of his vision, Daniel wants his reader to know the historical context in which this prophecy was given and to consider its interpretation and application in the light of that context. In the latter days, before the kingdom of God is established on the earth, kings and kingdoms will become worse and worse. In the second scene, heaven calmly prepares for court, which will determine that the time for judgment has come. The fulfillment of the prophecy of Belshazzars demise underscores the certainty of the fulfillment of Daniels vision in the last days. 1 John 3:1-3 says, See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. The words of verse 1 point to the relationship between the prophecy Daniel received and its historical setting and context. Daniel 2:26-49 Thus he said: The fourth beast will be a fourth kingdom on the earth, which will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. The inter-relationship between the prophecies of chapters 2 and 7 is demonstrated on the following page: Deterioration: Gold to iron mixed with clay, Deterioration: Nearly human to blaspheming beast. At this point the revelation ended. This horn Daniel says was also waging war against the saints and overpowering them until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One. We know that Jesus came the first time to die and that He will come again to subdue His enemies and establish His kingdom. Introduction to Daniel 11 The angel that Daniel was talking with gave Daniel greater detail concerning the fourth beast; he described this fourth beast as a fourth kingdom coming from the earth, it will be different from all the rest, this kingdom will devour the whole earth and tread it down and crush it. They believed that the Messiah would come to establish the kingdom, to bless the Jews and to condemn the Gentiles. Chapter 2. Daniel 5 is an illustration and a prototype of what will happen in the end times, as described in the prophecy of Daniel 7. It is at this time that all human kingdoms will become subject to God and to the saints in the eternal kingdom, which the Son of Man will establish when He comes to the earth to judge and to rule. So he told me and made known to me the interpretation of these things: These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings who will arise from the earth. His final offspring, so to speak, is the little horn which becomes the great blasphemer, whose life and kingdom is suddenly cut off by the Ancient of Days and the Son of Man. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him." (2:14-16) Notice Daniel's calm in the face of the king's rush to judgment. These are the things Daniel sees in the vision. So the king spoke, and said, "Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its interpretation trouble you." Having related the dream, Daniel then interprets it: it concerns four successive kingdoms, beginning with Nebuchadnezzar, which will be replaced by the everlasting kingdom of the God of heaven. While most of those in this kingdom may not have had a true conversion, at least they tolerated the Jewish faith as the religion of the state. Liberals reject all prophecies, because they require a sovereign God and a miraculous revelation of future events. The precise meaning of the symbols of the raised side and the three ribs is illusive. Thus, the vision is yet unfulfilled in terms of its major emphasis. Daniel said that his thoughts were greatly alarming him and his face grew pale. 11 Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 states, For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, that is Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath to come. (1 Thessalonians 1:910, NASB95)[6] Finally, the more we know about the future, the more our hearts should be moved to prayerful petition for those who will face the judgment of God if they do not turn in faith to Jesus Christ. The coming of the Son of Man is represented as one coming, and not two. Each beast has its own unique characteristics. God also allows the wicked to persist and even to prosper, so that those whom He has chosen might be saved (Romans 9:22-24). As Daniel continues to watch, someone descends with the clouds of heaven, one like a Son of Man. He is presented to the Ancient of Days, and to Him is given dominion, glory, and the eternal kingdom. The righteous will suffer. And yet God said they would. Two major divisions comprise our text: (1) Daniels dreamverses 1-14 and (2) the interpretationverses 15-28. Baldwin, p. 142. As the destruction of the last beast and the blaspheming horn came as a complete shock to them, so the Lords coming will catch unbelievers unprepared as well (24:27-39). Let Thy hand be upon the man of Thy right hand, Upon the son of man whom Thou didst make strong for Thyself (Psalm 80:17). Even those portions which we believe have been fulfilled, students of prophecy differ about the way of their fulfillment. In those days, as in our own, there are always those are too quick to conclude that the kingdom of God has come (see Matthew 24:4, 6, 8, 24-28; 2 Thessalonians 2:1ff.). In Daniels dream the Roman empire was represented by such a terrible beast that Daniel could name no animal which fit its description. The saints should neither believe nor behave on the basis of how things appear to be (the wicked prospering and prevailing over the righteous). Before the kingdom of God is established on the earth, four earthly kingdoms will rise and fall. He would, after His death, burial, and resurrection come in His glory, rewarding men according to their deeds (16:27). This fourth beast has the distinction of ten horns.
